UK-based Ripple Energy, a green energy company helping over 20,000 households access renewable power, is on the verge of going into administration, according to newly filed court documents.
Founded in 2017, Ripple offers a unique clean energy model that allows customers to part-own wind farms and solar projects in exchange for discounted electricity through major energy suppliers like British Gas, Octopus Energy, E.on Next, and Good Energy.
What’s Happening with Ripple Energy?
This week, Ripple filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator, the first formal step typically taken around 10 days before a company either collapses or is rescued by a buyer.
A spokesperson confirmed the company is working with Begbies Traynor, a restructuring firm, and will continue trading during the process:
“Ripple Energy will continue to trade while the Joint Administrators seek a suitable buyer of the business and it is anticipated that there will be no disruption to the service during the sale process.”
Ripple’s Model: Putting People at the Heart of Clean Energy
Ripple Energy is not a traditional energy supplier. Instead, it allows individuals to invest in renewable energy sites—such as wind turbines—and receive credits or discounts on their bills from partnered suppliers.
This model has been celebrated as an innovative way to:
✅ Reduce energy bills
✅ Lower carbon emissions
✅ Increase public ownership in the UK’s clean energy revolution
But the company’s financial instability raises concerns about the sustainability of people-powered energy models, especially in today’s volatile energy market.
Industry Reaction
Greg Jackson, founder of Octopus Energy, responded on social media:
“It’s sad to see the situation there… We’d love to be helpful if possible and viable, but I can’t say much more than that at present. It really is (rightly) all down to the administrators and co-ops at this stage.”
Ripple currently employs 35 staff and is led by founder Sarah Merrick, who in October said:
“A clean energy revolution is underway in Britain, and it’s our mission to make sure real people are at the heart of it.”
What Does This Mean for You?
If you’re a Ripple Energy investor or customer, services are expected to continue as normal during the administration process. However, it’s a reminder that even innovative, green energy businesses can face serious challenges.
