Rishi Sunak has announced some further help for Brits who are struggling in the UK with the cost of living crisis. The Chancellor first announced a £200 loan which would have to be paid back over time, but since then, this has changed to a £400 payment that does not need to be repaid. This will go right into your energy account, to offset some of the price increase. Council tax rebates have also been handed out across the country, with many receiving the £150 payment within a matter of weeks.
Measures have been criticised however, as Ofgem have said that household energy bills could rocket by another £800 in October. Rishi Sunak, in an attempt to help the British public has announced a windfall tax for gas and oil giants. He has also announced that 8 million households, who are currently being helped by the benefit scheme, are going to receive a payment of £650 to help with the cost of living. The DWP is going to be making the payment in two lump sums and the first one is going to be in July. The second will be paid in Autumn.
Those who may be suffering disproportionately from the cost of living crisis, namely pensioners, are going to be getting a one-off payment of around £300. The Triple Lock for Pensions is also going to be brought back. Those who are disabled and on non-means-tested benefits will be getting a payment of £150. This is going to be paid on top of the £650 that has already been announced.
Although not everyone will qualify for the extra payments, such as those who are not on benefits or at a retirement age, it’s important to know that nearly every household will benefit from the £400 energy payment.
